He regularly threw throws of more than 30 yards during Pop Warner games when he was eight years old, when his peers could usually only throw a football a little more than 10 yards.
He played collegiate football at Alabama, where he won the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards as a sophomore and was the Offensive MVP of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship during his freshman season.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dolphins selected Tagovailoa fifth overall after a hip injury ended his junior season. Prior to taking over as the team’s regular starter in 2021, he alternated between starting and backup roles during his first season.

As one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country, he was also selected for the Elite 11 roster, where he was honored as the team’s MVP.
During the 2017 recruiting cycle, Tagovailoa received a four-star rating and was named the top high school talent in the state of Hawaii.
He went to Saint Louis School in Honolulu, the same institution as quarterback Marcus Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner and Atlanta Falcons, who was a mentor to him when they were young in Hawaii.
Before deciding to enroll at the University of Alabama in January 2017, he had 17 scholarship offers to play college football.
