A family friend and Oak Island historian named Charles Barkhouse called Blankenship a “living legend.”
“I mean, how often do you meet someone who is looking for treasure?” Barkhouse had a laugh. “In reality, he did a lot more than just look for treasure. His life was very full.”
Barkhouse said Blankenship was a veteran of the U.S. Army who ran a successful contracting business in Miami, Florida. In 1965, he read a story in “Reader’s Digest” that got him interested in the Oak Island mystery.
Barkhouse said, “He’s put his blood, sweat, and tears into that island to try to figure out what’s going on.”
In 1795, a group of teenagers started digging at the site because they thought they might find a pirate’s buried treasure.

In an interview from 2010, Blankenship talked about how the “Reader’s Digest” story got him interested in the story.
“I gave the article to my wife and told her to read it. She did, and when she was done, she said, “So what?” I said, “Well, number one, there’s treasure on Oak Island, and number two, I’ll help get it.” “That was the start.”
Blankenship and a group of investors, like brothers Rick and Marty Lagina, who are doing most of the work on the island right now, owned the island together. During the six seasons of the reality TV show, their search for treasure has been a big part of it.

Barkhouse said Blankenship moved to the island in the 1970s and was driven in the same way he thinks most people who are interested in a mystery are.
“These treasure hunters are going all the way back to the beginning because they want to be the ones to figure this out,” Barkhouse said. “You have to believe with all your heart that you are the one who will solve it. If you don’t, there’s no point in being there.”
He said Blankenship had a strong presence and told great stories.
“At 95, you knew you were shaking someone’s hand when you shook his hand,” Barkhouse said. “He had a big pair of hands because he worked hard his whole life. He was as tight on him as a steel vice.”
Rick Lohnes, who runs tours of Oak Island, said he first met Blankenship in the 1980s at the auto repair shop where Lohnes used to work.
Lohnes said, “He used to come in and tell me stories, but he never told me a whole story.” “He always told me I had to wait until he came back again.”
Lohnes said that Blankenship really thought there was treasure to be found and that it was “just a matter of getting to it.”
“To me Dan is Oak Island. The knowledge he took with him is a real loss.”
